Fifteen marathons and I’m still learning about my body. An easy conclusion after suffering through – and after – my latest 26.2 is that I should strongly consider not running a marathon when the temperature rises to 85. Of the two I’ve done in such conditions, the outcome was the same: nausea, vomiting, and a trip to the hospital. In a word, dehydration. Continue reading ‘No poison in this IV’

Bennington: It all started here
I’ll never forget my first day as a runner. Sure, I’d run before, but it was to get in shape for baseball season in high school; it was required running.
This run was different: I did it on my own. Continue reading ‘Bennington: It all started here’
Some guy named Tim wrote this
One of my colleagues at the MetroWest Daily News – Tim Whelan – wrote this. Check it out …
Endurance is not a buzzword for Michelle Roy. It’s a way of life.
“If you go out there with the right frame of mind,” she said, “you will see yourself as a different man or woman, whether you finish or not.”
On June 15, Roy’s mental and physical fortitude will again be run through the wringer when she takes part in the Spartan Death Race, an annual event in Pittsfield, Vt. Continue reading ‘Some guy named Tim wrote this’
Another Boston ‘death march’
When I first saw the forecast on Wednesday, my first thought was: “those poor runners.”
Back then, it was for 72 degrees. That was nothing. Now it’s up to 90 for Monday’s Boston Marathon. Continue reading ‘Another Boston ‘death march’’
14 years later, another jacket
Only a runner could get excited about this.
I won’t be running the Boston Marathon on Monday (darn it!), but I’ll be at the finish line for work. And because I’m part of the media, I am required to wear the adiddas jacket and a press credential that are issued to all media members.
My jacket, which is black as usual, has orange stripes. But it’s not the look that has me excited. It’s getting a new jacket to run in. Continue reading ’14 years later, another jacket’
TD goes to the Garden
The last time I covered a sporting event at the pro sports arena on Causeway Street in Boston, it was 1998. And the place was known as the FleetCenter. Now it’s TD Garden.
I was at the Fleet in ’98 to cover the Hopkinton girls basketball Div. 4 state championship game against Tyngsborough. We sat along the baseline behind one of the baskets as the Hillers defeated Tyngs for the title. Hopkinton and Tyngsborough are now in Div. 2, and the Tigers just played in the state title game over the weekend in Worcester. The more things change … Continue reading ‘TD goes to the Garden’
Back in the woods, already
Well, that didn’t take long.
I thought it would be weeks until I was able to hit the trails again. Wrong. Continue reading ‘Back in the woods, already’
My luck has ‘run’ out
When I first arrived here in mid-December, I took to the trails in Ayer, near my apartment. Every day, I found more and more wooded pathways in which to run: in Groton, in Harvard. And every time I was able to enter the woods, I said to myself, “I won’t be able to run trails for much longer, so enjoy it.” Continue reading ‘My luck has ‘run’ out’
I won’t “run Boston” this year, but I did run Boston this morning.
It was nothing like I’ve been used to from 8 years of running in Bozeman, Montana. Still, it was invigorating. Continue reading ‘Down by the banks of the River Charles’
Whither Natick’s nickname
What to do … what to do …
The subject of Natick High’s nickname has come up once again. And this time I’m weighing in.
When the name was changed from Redmen to Red and Blue four years ago, I hardly noticed; I was living in Montana and barely caught wind of it. The only thing I remember was that Doug Flutie was against it. Other than that, I shrugged it off. Continue reading ‘Whither Natick’s nickname’
